The Antigua research was connected with a social assessment of Smithsonian King Crab Mariculture funded by US Agency for International Development. The purpose of the research was to see if fishers or farmers were better prepared and more willing to adopt the notion of crab mariculture. The research, which was also the foundation for the Dominical Republic study, concluded that fishers will make better farmers of the sea than exclusive farmers. The book Caribbean Fishermen Farmers (1986) by R. Stoffle presents the findings of this study.
